His outstanding performance in defeating CANFORD CLIFFS (IRE) [127] by five lengths marks him out as the best miler since the WTR commenced back in 2004 and one would have to go back to 1984 under the former International Classifications to find a higher rated miler, namely EL GRAN SENOR (USA) [138].

Another British trained three year old who has come to the fore in the last month is NATHANIEL (IRE) [127] winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by Betfair) (G1) where he defeated the older horses WORKFORCE (GB) [125] and ST NICHOLAS ABBEY (IRE) [122]. Workforce had earlier met with defeat in the Coral Eclipse Stakes (G1) by the former Australian star and now Irish trained SO YOU THINK (NZ) [126].

Nathaniel tops the classic division in the twelve furlong category at the moment ahead of the French trained MEANDRE (FR) [123] who claimed some notable scalps in the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (G1) in defeating the Irish trained colts SEVILLE (GER) [120] and TREASURE BEACH (IRE) [121] along with his compatriot RELIABLE MAN (IRE) [121].

Other notable European performances since the last WTR update include a return to form for the British trained older mare MIDDAY (GB) [120] in winning the Nassau Stakes (G1), and an accomplished performance by the joint champion European juvenile of 2010 DREAM AHEAD (USA) [120] who showed that he has trained on as a three year old with the top performance by a European sprinter this year in winning the Darley July Cup (G1) impressively.

In North America, ACCLAMATION (USA) [122] added to his earlier success in the Charles Whittingham Memorial (G1) with an impressive all the way success in the Eddie Read (G1) which marked the best performance seen on turf in that continent so far in 2011 just ahead of the United Nations (G1) victor TEAKS NORTH (USA) [121], the Irish trained CAPE BLANCO (IRE) [120], conqueror of GIO PONTI (USA) [119] in the Man o' War (G1) and COURAGEOUS CAT (USA) [119], winner of the Shoemaker Mile (G1) on the west coast.

Meanwhile on dirt, SHACKLEFORD (USA) [121] reaffirmed his consistent level of performance among the classic generation in the Haskell Invitational (G1), where he emerged as the best horse in the race at the weights, albeit in defeat to COIL (USA) [118] (to whom he conceded 4lb). Similarly, HAVRE DE GRACE (USA) [119] emerges as the best older mare on dirt in North America again in narrow defeat to great rival BLIND LUCK (USA) [118] (to whom she conceded 2lb) in a pulsating Delaware Handicap (G2) while STAY THIRSTY (USA) [119] emerged as a potential leader of his generation in annexing the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga in impressive fashion.
