Australia rates horses for the season

The 2006-7 ANZ Classifications have been released reflecting the best individual performances by horses during the recently concluded racing season in Australia and New Zealand.

The ratings were headed by outstanding sprinters Miss Andretti and Takeover Target, middle distance stars El Segundo and Pompeii Ruler and Japanese staying ace Delta Blues, winner of the 2006 Melbourne Cup. All five achieved a season peak rating of 120.

The best performance by a New Zealand horse during the season was by Darci Brahma who rated 115 in winning the GI Telegraph Handicap at Trentham in January 2007.

The listings are compiled by the Senior Handicappers representing the Principal Racing Authorities of Australia as well as New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. For inclusion in the Annual Classifications a horse must have finished in the first six placings in a Group race or the first four placings at Listed race level. Horses 3yo and over are included in the listings where they have achieved a rating 100 or higher and for 2yo’s an individual performance rating 95 and higher.

ANZ Committee Chairman Greg Carpenter said “The 2006-7 ratings reflect the growing reputation of Australian horses on the world stage and a significant increase in ratings for performances achieved across the broad spectrum of Australian black type races”.

Carpenter noted “the listings do not attempt to identify the champion overall performer in each category nor do they reflect an accumulation of performances during the season. The ratings give a numeric value to an individual performance.”

The ANZ Classifications are representative of the actual race ratings and are consistent with the methodology adopted by the IFHA for the compilation of the International ratings. Ratings are available upon request.
