Italy awards new betting licenses

The Italian authorities have awarded thousands of new betting licenses to a variety of companies to operate betting shops, horserace betting shops, sales points and online services.

The license for shops and sales points where awarded on a commercial basis following a public tender procedure that started in the autumn of 2006. They include a maximum of 1900 shops for sports betting, 500 shops for betting on horseracing, 4,400 sales points for sports betting and 9,500 for horseracing.

Most licenses have been awarded to existing Italian operators, but also some of the largest British bookmakers received licenses.
